Tonina's main engine is a Caterpillar D333TA (TA: turbo charged and after cooled). It is the original engine (rebuilt once). Its a completely mechanical, inline 6 cylinder, four stroke engine that produces about 270 HP at 1,800 RPM. Tonina can operate at a range of about 5,000 n.m. at 1,600 RPM pushing her along at 8.75 knots. If you really feel like taking it slow at 7.5 knots, you can extend your range to about 7,000 nautical miles.
The primary generator is a 9KW Northern Lights generator, installed in 2020 with a Gem Series sound enclosure. Fuel efficient, quiet and reliable, any mariner knows the value of owning a Northern Lights.
Tonina's secondary generator is an original, John Deere. This engine is couple to a gear box that is in-turn coupled to the main shaft to operate as an emergency come-home. The John Deere also powers a 10KW generator as an alternative to the Northern Lights.
Other than the Northern Lights, Tonina's engines are both dry stack exhaust. This method of exhausting benefits Tonina is three ways: One, the heat generated by running the main engine on extended voyages has a natural drafting effect of the room as the air follows the heat of the exhaust out of the oversized smoke stack. This, coupled with great natural ventilation eliminates the need to ever need to run mechanical ventilation. Secondly, the ease of maintenance with a dry exhaust system ensure a worry free voyage. Lastly, the risk of seawater intrusion to any engine that runs a wet exhaust system is greatly reduced by eliminating the connection. Tonina was built for any weather and eliminating a possible entry point for seawater to enter the engine is now a standard seen in any ocean-crossing capable vessel.
Speed isn't everything! In a world obsessed with going faster, sometimes we forget to enjoy the trip. Tonina is certainly an "enjoy the trip" kind of boat. Seakindly and efficient.
