Sea Magazine was a different kind of magazine in 1961 but so was the boating world. It was a time when owning a boat was a lifestyle whereas today it is more of a status symbol. Tonina was advertised to the public as a lifestyle cruiser.
Wooden Boat Magazine interviewed Rick Fricke in 2018 about Tonina and the legend that built her, Sugar Lindwall. The article features a photo of Tonina on her launching day.
Sugar Lindwall and his wife Lucy became friends wit the Fricke family almost immediately after Rick and Merrie purchased Tonina in 1988. When Sugar passed away in 2011, the Fricke's hosted the Lindwall family aboard Tonina to lay Sugar to rest just off of Santa Barbara Harbor.

In this particular issue, several of the Lindwall built vessels gathered at the front dock in Santa Barbara to celebrate Sugar Lindwall and work with the Maritime Museum to explain his role and the role of Lindwall fleet.

Although this article doesn't feature Tonina, it does provide insight to a new concept of the day (prior to designing Tonina) and that was converting the long proven seiner hull into a capable, offshore yacht. DeFever was introducing a whole new type of yachting.
Sea Magazine yet again shows their interest in Tonina, her sisters, her builder and of course her architect, Art DeFever. The concept of go-anywhere style yachts was very intriguing to the boating world and people wanted to know more.
