Tonina's electrical system (battery banks, generators, inverters, etc.) are all doubled in capacity to run independent of each other in the event of an equipment failure. She runs two independent banks of 32VDC and two banks of 12VDC. Her two 4KW Outback charger/inverters are isolated for redundancy and are backed-up by a 32VDC LaMarch charger.
Tonina's main systems are all 32V so utilizing the inverters isn't required for much of anything other than her refrigeration, or lighting up her commercial Bertazoni galley range. All of her lighting is LED and with the incredible amp hours stored aboard, running the generator for a couple hours in the morning and evening is more than sufficient, and at times, it's not run at all, allowing for a silent ship all night and throughout the day.
Tonina's main engine shaft is coupled to a come-home system that is powered by a standalone John Deere diesel plant. In the event of a catastrophic failure of the main engine, this system can be disengaged from the main engine at the gearbox and the John Deere will take over to get you home.
The John Deere (being a secondary emergency power set-up) is also dry-stacked to reduce maintenance. This engine sat one time for two years without operation and fired-off as though it ran only an hour ago. As with the rest of Tonina's engine room, the John Deere is also hot-rodded out with chrome nuts and bolts, a chrome alternator and air filters and Awlgripped a brilliant, sterile, gloss white.
Everyone in the boating world is aware of the tragic events that took place aboard the Conception at Santa Cruz Island in 2019. Important design features like a second way out are overlooked all too often; also, where does the escape hatch lead to? Outside or inside to a potentially burning cabin? Tonina has two ways out of every room and they all lead to the exterior; one may actually pass from the lazarette access hatch to the forward stateroom and out to the forward deck on the bow through a series of interior doors. Its a simple, well thought-out safety feature that your hope to never have to use.
Tonina has a small shop in her engine room. You enter her engine room from the interior, downstairs from the wheelhouse, the doors aren't exposed to the weather deck making a trip below to check on the machinery an easy task. The head room is 6'6" (a true walk-in engine room) and has enough power tools to be somewhat self sufficient at sea including a bench grinder, drill press, vice and metal lathe. The shop is completed with a large tool board, air compressor and even a stainless steel wash basin.
Spares are important to have aboard as any experienced voyager knows. Tonina has an extensive lazarette capable of housing an enormous collection of spare equipment. Some of Tonina's stock included 7 different bilge pumps of various sizes, drawers of stainless screws/bolts/hardware, an arsenal of electrical equipment including a mile of wire of various sizes, bins of spare hoses, numerous spare engine parts, alternators, belts, clamps, shackles, anchors several thousand feet of line of various sizes. She is equipped to deal with the unknown. Hope for the best but always plan for the worst.
Any yacht wouldn't be complete without toys! Tonina's primary tender is a 14' 2019 Novurania with a 50hp Yamaha. It is launched and lifted from her expansive boat deck with the use of her mast and boom. The procedure of launching the tender using oversize equipment makes the process easy enough to do single-handedly. In addition, Tonina tows a 20' center console Bertram.
Tonina is also equipped with tubes, boogie boards, surf boards, water skis, knee boards, rafts, inflatable lounges, beach chairs and everything a family might want while on vacation. She is also equipped with four complete SCUBA outfits and gear including tanks.
Although Rick Fricke is adamant about "no fishing on my boat", he does have enough tackle stored below to catch everything from a minnow to a marlin with quite the crow's nest to spot the fish from!
